Sales of refurbished dominate Black Friday on eBay

eBay is predicting that next Black Friday will be entirely dominated by sales of refurbished / upcycled products, following analysis from the recent Black Friday sales.

This year, there was a 1800% increase in searches for certified refurbished products, with refurbished products making up a massive 40% of the value of sales in the tech and media category.

The rise in the sale of refurbished items shows that people are keen to shop more sustainably over Black Friday, but also marks a significant increase in trust in the quality of these products – eBay have done a heck of a lot of work in this area with their Certified Refurbished programme and it appears to be resonating with consumers.

Sales of refurbished and upcycled products is good for all businesses in the sector, regardless of whether they are part of the official certified refurbished programme on eBay – we know that when someone starts shopping on the marketplace that their spend inevitably spills over into other categories rather than sticking to just one section of the site.

During the Black Friday period, eBay also saw big upticks in shopping small and people selling items even as they’re buying.

Sales of refurbished items more popular than ever

  • 1800% increase in searches for certified refurbished products compared to Black Friday week the year before
  • Phones and mattresses among most popular refurbished products:
    • Just under 800 certified refurbished mattresses, from Simba, Emma, Eve, Otty and Nectar, found a second home during Black Friday Week
    • 12% increase in searches for refurbished mattresses compared to Black Friday 2020
    • Refurbished products made up 40% of the value of sales in the tech and media category
    • 100% increase in searches for refurbished phones compared to Black Friday 2020

Shopping small on the rise

  • During Black Friday week, 91% of items sold on the site were from small business sellers
  • Small business sellers saw a 7% uplift in sales over Black Friday week compared to the previous week

People are still keen for a bargain

  • Shoppers spent 8% more on Black Friday deals than on Black Friday 2020
  • Shoppers spent the most money on eBay between 05.00 and 06.00 – early birds looking for high ticket deals before they sell out
  • On Black Friday and Cyber Monday, site traffic was busiest between 12.00-13.00 and least busy between 20.00 and 21.00

Home and garden products remain popular

  • Home & Garden was the biggest selling vertical over Black Friday week – making up over a quarter of the value of sales (28.5%)
    • Within this category, small businesses performed strongly – contributing to just over 24%
  • Big fashion brands had their best weeks ever – Express Trainers, Seasalt and Avenue85uk

“This year’s Black Friday saw the vast majority of items sold on eBay coming from our small business community, and these sales will have been a vital vote of confidence for the 300,000 SMBs on our site in the run-up to the Christmas period.

Businesses selling refurbished and upcycled goods have also particularly benefited, proving that more and more consumers are turning to eBay to shop more sustainably. This is a growing trend we’re seeing year on year and we have no doubt that, next year, refurbished products will dominate the best-selling products on Black Friday.”

I actually got a genuine bargain a wireless ring Doorbell for a about 28 euro on Amazon De plus I don't even think it was a BF deal. . It was supposed to be acceptable but it was mint. It was about the only real bargain I seen TBH. Anyway Black Friday was a washout as normal on eBay but the Cyber Monday was actually very good strangely both on eBay and my own store.. Now sales are fairly strong all the fake sales are done. I think it is the worst import we could have ever got and so counterproductive to business everyone waits for this one day turning a 3 month busy period into a few weeks.
