Etsy is well known and a major player in the handmade and vintage arena with a marketplace that offers curated collections and suggestions.
Etsy pledge to be net zero carbon by 2030
Etsy have recently announced their pledge to be net zero carbon by 2030. As news around the implications of global warming spreads across the media, companies are coming forward to make commitments in reducing their carbon footprint.
According to Etsy this is all part of their ambitious goals, from powering their marketplace with 100% renewable electricity to running zero waste operations globally.
In 2019 Etsy became the first global ecommerce platform to offset 100% of carbon emissions from shipping. This was an important step but not the end of their sustainability journey, Etsy remains bound and determined to do everything within their power to continue to be a carbon neutral company.
Net zero emissions by 2030
According to Etsy, their reduction objectives will follow the protocol of the Science Based Targets Initiative, the same initiative that other marketplaces like Amazon are following. The objectives will include a 50% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and a 13.5% absolute reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. In defining this goal, they set out to cast the widest net possible to ensure they’re reducing both direct and indirect carbon impact.
Efforts to reach this ambitious goal will touch every corner of the Etsy business and require buy-in from their teams and partners around the globe. Alongside the many actions they are already taking to lessen their carbon footprint, Etsy will be increasing their focus on working with sustainable vendors and suppliers, furthering their advocacy for the decarbonization of the logistics and transportation sector, and addressing opportunities for cleaner fulfillment.
As always, Etsy remains committed to holding themselves accountable and maintaining transparency as they push toward being net zero carbon by 2030.
