CitySprint see increase in DIY deliveries over August bank holiday

CitySprint have announced that they saw a 170% increase in DIY and home improvement deliveries across the August Bank Holiday weekend (29 – 31 August 2020) this year, compared to the same weekend in 2019. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic has been causing global lockdowns and restricted travel, consumers have been doing more to keep themselves busy inside the home. It is no surprise that as news began circulating on the possibility of another spike that consumers have started preparing for more home improvements and DIY projects.

The Bank Holiday figure caps an overall YOY increase of 123% so far this year for the delivery business in this category and it’s been greatly helped by the rise in home deliveries this year. The rise in ecommerce and deliveries is thanks to more consumers ordering online and choosing to have their items delivered to their homes to keep safe during the outbreak of Covid-19. It comes against the wider context of consumers already seeking greater convenience when it comes to fulfilment and shows how quickly everything had shifted to provide more convenience and safety, especially in a sector such as DIY which according to CitySprint still has room for leverage.

“DIY deliveries are often bulky and high-weight, making logistics and fulfilment a less straightforward proposition for these retailers compared to their counterparts in areas like electronics or fashion. But fast and convenient home deliveries are still a relatively under-exploited area in the DIY sector. These figures clearly show that the appetite for this from consumers is there.”
