#1 Greek online marketplace – Public PMM Group

By Chris Dawson August 25, 2020 - 11:35 am

The PMM Group was created in 2019 through the merger of Public, Greece’s top digital retailer and number one Greek online marketplace, and the Greek arm of MediaMarkt, Europe’s top international consumer electronics retailer headquartered in Germany. With the absence of the behemoth that is Amazon, Public was the first to launch a Greek online marketplace platform.

Coupled with the Greek language, which naturally uses the Greek Alphabet, selling to Greece comes with challenges slightly higher than the Northern EU countries. But the lack of competition also offers opportunity for those retailers and brands ready to step up and target the Greek consumer.

Accelerated growth during COVID-19

Amidst a highly challenging trading environment for retail chains in Europe, PMM Group successfully pivoted its business model during the pandemic to adapt to changing consumer habits in lockdown, and saw demand for the brand rocket in comparison to its closest competitor. They performed the switch from omnichannel to pureplay ecommerce in just 14 days to adapt to lockdown and have been killing it ever since.

Internet searches for Public brand increased by 28 x compared to just 7x for nearest competitor and they delivered 600,000 products during lockdown in Greece – more than all competitors put together. Now the #1 brand in orders and product handling – PMM handled 9 x more online sales during the COVID-19 period.

Selling requirements on Public’s marketplace

Retailers and brands must be able to deliver the following in order to sell via Public’s marketplace:

  • Good product availability
  • Delivery time of 3-4 days
  • Offer consumer invoicing
  • Agree to certain quality requirements – i.e, high order acceptance rate, low order refused rate etc.
  • Provide delivery times and status to customers
  • Provide customer support where required

Top selling categories include Tech, Home and Garden, Sports and Beauty, with many other categories rapidly growing.

Language and cross border

Sellers from any country and market are accepted provided that they offer products that are designed for a Greek audience (i.e. language must be in Greek where necessary), and deliver to Greece within the timeframe promised.

Every seller may sell on the marketplace and offer products with VAT set from the country of origin from which they are selling. There is no requirement to be based in Greece or Cyprus, you can sell from the UK or any other country you are based in.

Public marketplace fees

Monthly fees of €39 per month applicable only following transactions, and commission fees vary depending on category, from 4% to 12%.

Due to the pandemic, Public is supporting new sellers with a ‘FREE FROM FEE’ policy until the end of 2020.

Good luck getting delivery times of 3-4 days to Greece!!! DHL or UPS, might do that, so high delivery cost means only expensive items will work, any standard postage service, will take longer than that. Plus the fact that either the Greece postal service steals everything or Greece customers claim non-delivery on everything that isn’t fully trackable, either way. Thanks but no thanks.

3-4 days seems legit. Pretty short compared to Amazon since their delivery times to Greece are now as long as 20 days!

great opportunity to sell in Greece as there isn’t any other marketplace. This is the way to go

Provided you can guarantee delivery in 3 to 4 days!!!! Which means very expensive international postage rate, so this will only work for high value goods.

If you need to pay for returns, that will feel like a quick firm kick in the nuts, with a lasting pain.

What do you mean by legit? Do you use a standard postal service that can deliver to Greece in 3 to 4 days?

I’m talking about the specific site. I have ordered several times, I have received my orders with their collaborative courier, ACS and Speedex if I remember well

I visited Greece last year. During my stay there for a few weeks I ordered a bunch of things online from the specific site, which were delivered within 2 days. I don’t have any other experience from other purchases but that one went pretty well!
