Google pilot voice purchases through Voice Match

By Lauren Fruncillo June 1, 2020 - 8:00 am

Reports suggest that Google has begun piloting the ability to make purchases through the Voice Match feature on Google Assistant.

As part of the pilot purchases have been limited to in-app on Google Play or from restaurants with ordering through Google enabled. There is also a limit on how much can be spent per transaction and how many daily transactions are allowed and to keep everything secure Google requires users to re-authorize their accounts to enable Voice Match purchasing.

Convenience is a key desire of consumers and this update will allow consumers to make purchases by voice through smart speakers and displays without the need to confirm transactions on their mobile devices as was usually the case. The update will remove frustrations that the previous system has caused whilst making it easier for consumers to make purchases through voice which is expected to result in higher sales volumes and more profit.

According to Google, Voice Match can understand a series of different languages and pick them up more accurately than Alexa. The device is set to increase Google’s online sales and help SMBs compete with Amazon.

No more accidental purchases

The new update will avoid the widely publicized reports of unwanted purchases through smart speakers. More explicit consent means children won’t be able to make voice purchases either as has been an issue in the past and with focus on lessening the risk around using smart speakers, consumers will have more trust and confidence in the Voice Match.
