Walmart welcomes ThredUP to their online marketplace
Walmart have recently entered the fashion resale market by welcoming ThredUP to their online marketplace. According to Walmart, meeting the evolving needs of its customers is important, and buying and selling used fashion is a huge part of this.
Walmart’s closed marketplace of independent sellers is growing through their small selection of vetted independent sellers somewhat easier to police than the larger open marketplaces like eBay and Amazon. The larger marketplaces do have extensive operations in place said to limit the potential for fake items and fraud however, this isn’t always enough.
The used clothing market is a popular one and according to Walmart, ThredUP’s 2020 Annual Resale Report states that 70% of consumers have bought or are now willing to buy secondhand. Consumers enjoy living sustainably and ThredUP is a brand that sells pre-owned garments and shoes deemed “new” or “like new” or “Gently used” accessories and handbags which give consumers the comfort of knowing they are doing their bit and purchasing an item of good quality. Used clothing brands are likely to make a big impact on the health of our planet. Mass waste is being produced every year from thrown out fashion and online marketplaces could very well get more involved with the used fashion industry to help them achieve their future goals for sustainability.
