Amazon Singapore launches at Amazon.sg

By Chris Dawson October 9, 2019 - 10:00 am

Amazon Singapore has fully launched on desktop, mobile browser and shopping app. Amazon say that customers can buy millions of products from categories such as Books, Video Games, Consumer Electronics, Baby and Toys, and Home and Kitchen. All customers in Singapore enjoy free delivery on eligible orders over S$40 within 2-3 days. Customers who sign up for Prime receive free one-day delivery on local selection with no minimum spend, and free international shipping on eligible orders over S$60 for Amazon International Store products.

To boost the product selection, the Amazon International Store allows consumers to shop a wide selection of products available from Amazon US without leaving Amazon.sg. Purchases from Amazon International Store are shipped and sold from Amazon US with free international delivery for Prime orders over S$60.

Alongside the full blown launch, third party merchants can now also sell on Amazon.sg to offer their products to shoppers alongside those from Amazon retail. Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) has also launched in Singapore making it simpler for those who prefer to use Amazon Logistics for the final mile delivery of their products.

There is also a special offer for merchants who sign up early – there is no monthly subscription until the 31st of March 2020. From the 1st of April 2020 subscription fees will be S$29.95 per month.

“With Amazon.sg, we want to provide what customers have been asking us for: the ability for everyone to shop on desktop and mobile, more local and international selection from Amazon and trusted sellers, paired with fast and reliable delivery. And we are also adding even more benefits for Prime members. Today marks the next step for us in Singapore, and we will continue to work hard to earn the trust of Singapore customers by growing our product range, ensuring low prices, and providing a convenient and trusted shopping experience.”
– Henry Low, Singapore Country Manager, Amazon

The launch hasn’t gone entirely smoothly with some existing Singapore customers complaining on social media that selection has actually reduced, with one user saying “Where has the product section for 4K Blu-ray and DVDs gone to? I am unable to see it in the new app/site and it’s not under Home Entertainment. Even the CD and Vinyl section is gone now”. It’s likely that these are a few teething issues as it’s almost inconceivable that Amazon won’t be selling media in Singapore.

Where Amazon will win is that whilst Singapore is a relatively small country it opens the gateway to trading across the whole of South East Asia and we would expect to see buyers from neighbouring countries starting to use the site and eventually more Amazon country sites to open up. Alongside the European and American unified Amazon accounts, in the near future merchants could start seeing a South East Asia unified Amazon account.

Amazon.sg is the 16th full Amazon country site, joining Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and their home country the United States.
