TheMarket has launched as the latest New Zealand marketplace as a new venture for The Warehouse Group, New Zealand’s largest retail group. TheMarket aims to offer an inspirational online shopping experience giving New Zealanders more choice of local, international and niche brands. While the venture is primarily a New Zealand marketplace, naturally Australia is on their radar for the future.

TheMarket launched with 1,500+ brands and 1m+ products and they have already signed up over 400 UK merchants with 160 onboarded in what is an ongoing process. TheMarket don’t aim to be another mass marketplace, but rather a unique brand-first proposition. If you have an interesting lifestyle focused range and a brand then this is an English speaking platform that will give you reach in New Zealand in Sterling, paid in Sterling with a new audience to extend your reach.

The focus is on new in-season products and not to be an off-price outlet, so your full range and brand that’s appropriate to the distribution channel should be successful. TheMarket are not interested in grey/parallel imports but would like direct relationships with brand owners or authorised retailers.

Already getting good traction are the health and beauty categories along with footwear and apparel. Home and Living is of interesting, but heavy bulky items makes shipping more challenging. Sorts and outdoor along with kids and toys are also categories where you should see early success.

To assis UK and EU merchants, TheMarket have a shipping solution which enables you to either ship direct to the end customer in New Zealand, or if you prefer to a consolidation address near Heathrow and TheMarket will take care of getting your products across the world to the end customer.

Already TheMarket are excited at the prospect of UK merchants and velocity pretty good with 50-60 merchants a month being onboarded. This is something unique and different for the New Zealand marketplace arena and so TheMarket aim to make it really easy for merchants to get onboard. They have relationships with the likes of ChannelAdvsor, Intelligent Reach, and WearePentagon to assist merchants as well as solutions to plug into Shopify and Magento. They have also engaged Pivot in the UK to handhold merchants along the way.

If you’d like to sign up to sell on TheMarket you can sign up here.
