Top 5 Australian retail websites see eBay in 1st and 4th position

By Chris Dawson May 21, 2019 - 10:00 am

eBay is far and away the most popular shopping destination in Australia according to latest top 5 Australian retail websites list from discount platform CupoNation. For January to March 2019, eBay Australia had over 94 million visits with next closest being Amazon with 58 million visits.

An interesting datapoint is that only one traditional retailer has made it into the top 5 Australian retail websites Bunnings who with 41 million visitors are placed third. The other four places comprise eBay and Amazon’s domestic Aussie sites and the international versions of their sites.

eBay Australia is the undisputed leader in the top 5 Australian retail websites, with more visitors than Amazon Australia 35 millon) and Amazon Global (58 million) combined. Other retailers in the top 10 Australian retail websites include Woolworths (33 million), JB HiFi (29 million), Coles (22 million), Kmart (22 million) and Kogan (20 million).

It’s worth noting that Amazon’s rankings are the reverse of eBay’s. Amazon.com gets more visits from Australia than Amazon.com.au. Aussies are still more likely to shop internationally on Amazon than they are on their own country site and this suggests merchants would be wise to add shipping to their Amazon offers in other territories – especially in the US.

Seeing Amazon Global ahead of Amazon Australia reinforces Amazon’s decision to back track on blocking Australians from shopping globally in order to avoid collecting GST. Amazon reopened global sales for Australian consumers last November just in time for Black Friday.

eBay is entrenched into Australian shopping with first and fourth position in the top 5 Australian retail websites and with 94 million shopping on eBay.com.au it’s well worth the effort of listing down under. 36 million Aussies will shop on international eBay sites but their own country site is where most will look first. If you’re not already listing on eBay Australia then it’s time to start doing so if you want their business.
