Amazon Day consolidates orders and saves Amazon Logistics costs

Amazon Day has come out of the pilot program we wrote about last November and today becomes a regular choice for Amazon users in the US. Available today to all Prime members in the US, Amazon Day enables Prime members to choose a day of the week to be their delivery day, which makes it easier to get purchases grouped and delivered together and, in many cases, in fewer packages.

Once Prime members select a day of the week that works best for them, adding items to their Amazon Day order is easy, with all items ordered that week arriving together on the designated day. Members can choose to use the Amazon Day delivery option any time they’d like and it’s easy to change their Amazon Day at checkout to another day that works best for them.

Members can also choose from Prime’s fast, free shipping options for any item they don’t want to include as part of their Amazon Day shipment. The program is one of many sustainability initiatives to help achieve Shipment Zero, the company’s vision to make all Amazon shipments net zero carbon, with 50% of all shipments net zero by 2030.

“Amazon Day adds another level of convenience to the many shipping benefits Prime members already enjoy. Prime members can now choose to get their orders delivered together in fewer boxes whenever possible on the day that works best for them. We’ve been testing this program with a group of Prime members and Amazon Day has already reduced packaging by tens of thousands of boxes – a number that will only continue to grow now that the program is available to Prime members nationwide.”
– Maria Renz, Vice President, Delivery Experience, Amazon

It goes without saying that grouping purchases and consolidating them into fewer shipments will likely also save Amazon considerable money and ease the strain on their logistics. Even if items purchased aren’t in the same Amazon fulfilment centre, they can still be grouped at the nearest Amazon Logistics depot and a local courier can make one drop on the consumer’s chosen Amazon Day, rather than multiple drops to the same address throughout the week.

Amazon Day will likely be more easily accepted by Amazon Prime members in the US where the standard Prime delivery is a 2-day service. Here in the UK it could be less welcome as we’re accustomed to a 1-day service from Amazon Prime. One of the biggest benefit of Prime is unlimited fast deliveries so it will be interesting to see how many members are willing to pay for Prime but accept once a week shipments. But, for those who care about the environment, purchase regularly, and aren’t always in a rush to receive their purchases, choosing a regular designated day of the week to receive Amazon parcels makes a lot of sense.

For Amazon customers in the UK, whilst Amazon Day isn’t yet available you can still choose a nominated day delivery option but this is on an order by order basis and not a feature that defaults for all future orders.
