Canada Post strikes are causing significant disruption

By Dan Wilson November 1, 2018 - 3:18 pm

The rotating action by the Canadian Postal Workers Union (CPWU) is seriously impacting deliveries and sorting activities at Canada Post. The strikes commenced on the 22nd of October and there is little indication of a resolution on the horizon. So if you’re sending goods using Canada Post, delays are expected to continue as a backlog mounts up. And as of today, the union has said that there will be an end to overtime too.

To give a sense of the scale of the disruption being caused by the industrial action, Canada Post say that there is a backlog of over 150 trailers in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal full of items waiting to be unloaded and processed and more are arriving arriving every day. Canada Post is keeping customers appraised of the situation on Twitter and more areas are being affected as the action escalates.

According to the national postal operator:

Since October 22, CUPW’s rotating strikes have shut down Canada Post’s operations in 52 cities and towns across the country. The union has ramped up their strike activity quickly, adding more communities each day and shutting down major processing centres for 48 hours. Canada Post is working hard to minimize the service impact to Canadians, but the escalating strikes have shut down our three largest processing facilities in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal for up to 48 hours. Combined, those three plants can process a million parcels and packets a day for communities across the country.

Ecommerce merchants will be becoming increasingly anxious that no resolution is in sight as the dispute which centres on pay and working conditions continues and the Cyber weekend, crucial for ecommerce, gets closer. This year Black Friday will fall on the 23rd November making it little more than 3 weeks away.
