Trump taskforce to examine USPS finances

By Dan Wilson April 16, 2018 - 6:52 am

President Donald Trump issued an executive order last Thursday creating a new task force with the aim of recommending reforms to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). In the order Trump says that USPS is “on an unsustainable financial path and must be restructured to prevent a taxpayer-funded bailout”.

Obviously Trump, as we’ve written before, has been vocal and critical on Twitter about the US postal service and his perceived view that Amazon is getting significant benefits from low costs. He has made a number of Tweets on the subject. Here’s one example:

USPS denies that the service loses in the region of $1.50 on an Amazon delivery and points out that it is required by law to provide at least “break-even” pricing. Joseph Corbett, the chief financial officer of the Postal Service, said previously that Trump’s tweets represent an “inaccurate and unfair account” of its package business.

Trump’s strange obsession with Amazon reflects several of his particular interests. Bezos obviously owns the The Washington Post which has been slammed by Trump for publishing “fake news” and the Amazon founder is also he world’s richest man. We’ll report on what the task force suggests when it publishes its findings.

Your story features a photo of the legendary GMC FJ8C USPS mail delivery vehicle, of which I was once a proud owner.
We used to have a US based phone book delivery business and this vehicle was even better for the job than the many VW vans we used over the years.
Thank you for my nostalgia of the day.
