We have applied twice now to Tophatter with no response. Not sure why?

Hi Martin – we’re looking into that right now. Thanks! Any questions you can always email me directly malcolm at tophatter.com

It sounds like a really good place to sell in volume, that is until you read the information which says they want 25-35% commission after the first 30 days. That is really high compared to other marketplaces (the most expensive I have ever heard of) and it is simply not affordable for many volume sellers, especially in fashion. It is a real shame as it sounded a great place to sell volume until I read that 🙁

      Hi Antony,

Thanks for your note. Our commission varies by category, but it is higher than many other market places. The commission primarily covers our marketing costs to acquire customers on Facebook, Google, TV, and other channels. What you’re paying for is a lot of eyeballs on your products.

On Tophatter, EVERY PRODUCT ends up on the front page. This is very different to eBay, Amazon and other marketplaces. You’re paying for exposure. You’re paying to shift your products.

For apparel, commission 25% plus a $0.50 fee each time an item sells.

Tophatter is not a site for sellers to sell at the highest price and lowest commission. There are many sites for that.

Tophatter is a site to shift volume. We sell over 2 million items per month. These are in the “impulse” price point range.

The purpose of the risk-free, commission-free trial is to help you test out your products to see what prices your products get on Tophatter.

We have thousands of sellers — many who generate $1 million – $10 million per year with us. It works for the right product.

Hope you’ll appreciate that we’re doing something different and give us a shot! We’d love to have you.

Had a look at the products that sells on this platform, looks more like a system for Chinese sellers, looking at the quality vs price point. It’s all got to be suspect stock.

Also, I watched the items on the main screen, either then have hundreds of people with the same name, or those same people are buying up a hell of a lot of stock, which also raises questions.

      Hi Dan,

Many products selling in ecommerce originate in China and Asia. Apple, Nike, and many other high end brands now manufacture in Asia.

A large number of high volume US, UK, and European ecommerce sellers we work with source their products from manufacturers in Asia. We don’t consider this to be suspect stock.

We are a marketplace, similar to eBay and Amazon. Many sellers start selling with us each day. If they are selling low quality or fraudulent items they will be shut down by our Trust and Safety team.

In regards to bidder names, I’ve never seen hundreds of active bidders with the same name. Not sure what you’re seeing there. We will look into it.

As I said to Antony, we’re trying to do things differently at Tophatter: the 90 second buying concept, free trials for new sellers, providing an account manager for every new seller, and more.

We hope the ecommerce community recognises we’re not perfect yet (no marketplace is), but we’re committed to building a world-class place to buy and sell.

At 10 million shoppers and sales of over 2 million items a month, we’re on our way, but there is a long road ahead. We value any and all input along the journey.

      Thanks and best,

      Malcolm

      Malcolm,

I am a professional jeweler salesperson. I took one look at your sight and 99% of your jewelry items are listed in a misleading manner and I couldn’t find one single item for sale that was REAL jewelry constructed of genuine precious metals and genuine gemstones. Your site sells cheap electronics and fake jewelry. Base metal jewelry with fake stones in it is suspect stock no matter where it is sourced from. Your jewelry items (which made up most of the screen) were all costume or drug store quality jewelry. None of this stuff is made to high standards and all of it is suspect stock. Definitely a place for cheap fake jewelry.

On the topic of high volume selling. Saying that you charge high commissions because you allow sellers a platform to move stock in volume is completely backwards. “You can sell more items for less money so we need to charge you more” makes no sense.

Free fees for a month before being jacked a 30% commission rate is nothing more than a gimmick.

From a UK selling point of view, one of my barriers to entry is the enforcement that all items are sent with tracking; most of the site is buyers from USA and with items selling between $10-15, there just isn’t enough money left it in after fees and postage to make any real profit. If international sellers were given the option to post without tracking then I would be keen to continue selling on the platform, even if that meant losing seller protection. Sadly, the requirement for tracking has killed it as an option for me.

Hi Michael – this is an issue for some UK sellers. We’re exploring it. The best solution currently is to:

      1. Work with a carrier who provides low-priced tracked shipping from UK to US.
      2. Ship only to UK – do this in International Shipping and remove shipping rates for any region you don’t want to ship to – that means your products won’t be sold in those regions. You can always add those regions back later.

The reason we require tracked shipping is that it provides a better customer experience and seller experience.

Buyers like knowing where their items are in transit. Tracked helps us protect sellers if a customer says they didn’t receive the item.

It’s not a perfect solution but I hope that’s helpful.

      Best,

      Malcolm

      Hi Malcolm,

      Thank you for the reply.

I’m in the process of getting quotes from carriers who can offer a competitive price for tracked shipping from the UK to the USA — hopefully I will get something for this soon. It would be interested to hear what Tophatter are exporting with regards to this?

With regarding to limiting my audience to the UK only; It is very hard to gauge how many of the buyers/sellers on the site are UK based. Without this, it is hard to know how successful my items will be — I can’t help but assume most will just end up going unsold/selling for $1, especially at unsociable times when UK buyers are very quiet?

I’m also concerned by some of the replies here that vary significantly in the commission they are said to be paying; it really seems like a lot of this key information isn’t available which, again, concerns me with regard to fully committing to selling on the site.

      Many thanks,

      Michael

This place is a scam, they treat you like dirt as a seller and as a buyer.

There is no scam Willy and we make an effort to treat our sellers and buyers with respect. It’s not a site that works for every seller or every product.

We’re building a business to support marketplace sellers who want to sell in high volume. At the moment we’re not a site for casual sellers. If you’re running a business with access to great products at healthy margins we can help you.

After your trial you will pay 50%+ commission. Also they won’t schedule your items unless your shipping is 0.00 – 2.00 and your start price $1. Everything sells for less than $5 so you will end up paying people to buy your items. Don’t waste your time!

If you want to feel violated and cheated on all levels then go right ahead. The people running this company are jokes. If you complain about any issues you may have they will throw you off the site. The
    dumbest people on the web.
