Gumtree classifieds site to display eBay listings

By Dan Wilson December 8, 2016 - 11:31 am

eBay have announced in a blog post that they will begin showing eBay items on Gumtree classifieds sister and other eBay owned classified businesses across the globe including Gumtree UK classifieds site and German classifieds site, Kleinanzeigen, by the end of 2016.

You can find out more and see how it’s rendered in the blog post here.

These launches have been informed by tests in Australia with eBay and Gumtree there and are based on experienced gained by the acquisition of Cargigi. In due course, in 2017, more properties will display eBay items.

As they say: “In the first half of 2017 we will scale our structured data and predictive model programs, exposing millions of relevant eBay listings on our classifieds sites around the world. Classifieds buyers will benefit from a seamless experience, finding eBay items in their search results and having the ability to purchase them on eBay with or without an eBay account. By realizing inherent synergies across our platforms, we have a great opportunity to unlock the power of eBay for our customers, especially when it comes to choice and selection.”

First up, any extra exposure for eBay items on eBay Classifieds sites is good news. But there will be cynic out there who will note that you never get something for nothing from eBay, so where’s the catch?

And there is also no word on whether sellers and buyers will be protected. Presumably it’s a simple eBay transaction and therefore business as normal. Let us know what you think.

    You ask “where’s the catch?”

As I see it there is no catch, Ebay promote items through Google Adwords and I also see Ebay items appearing on Facebook ads and many other sites This all costs money but Ebay make money from sales so it is good business to do it

I assume that like other advertising Ebay do, when you click on the item you like you will be taken to the Ebay listing to buy as normal

Gumtree will probably be paid a commission of the sales so good business for Gumtree

I’d much rather Ebay ads were appearing on Google shopping rather than Gumtree. I still get some appearing but no where near as many as used to appear.
