eBay Car Challenge Update: Final three busy restoration projects underway

By Chris Dawson June 23, 2016 - 11:13 am

The eBay car Challenge is well underway, with the final three entries having been chosen and each given £4,000 to spend on eBay to restore their cars.

Meet Robyn

The youngest restorer, Robyn Avis-Smith an engineering student from East Sussex, is tackling her second Volkswagen Beetle project at just 21 years of age.

Godfrey, the pet name for her 1971 Vee Dub, was originally purchased via ebay.co.uk and she hopes to use the funds to return him to his former glory. “Godfrey requires lots of interior trim pieces, some exterior body work and a complete engine overhaul but I plan to modify some parts and put my own stamp on this classic” she explains.

Meet Charlie

The oldest vehicle to receive some much-needed TLC is a rare 1968 Riley Kestrel 1300, which once belonged to restorer Charlie Renwick’s great grandmother.

Unfortunately, the car has been sitting in a garage for over 40 years and now needs some serious attention to ensure it shines once again. “My great aunt and mum have fond memories of my great grandmother driving this car around, so I hope to make them proud” explains the 25-year-old from Essex.

Meet David

Injecting a little sportiness into proceedings is David Newell’s glorious Mk3 Triumph GT6. The “poor man’s E-Type,” as David refers to it, bravely battles on as a daily drive but the amateur mechanic hopes to rid ‘Little Red’ of rust problems and replace much needed parts through the eBay Car Challenge, to ensure it turns heads now like it did back in the 1970s.

Murray Lambell, director of retail car parts & accessories, eBay, says, “With a VW that needs a whole new interior, a Riley Kestrel which needs a suspension overhaul to get it back on the road, and a Mk3 Triumph GT6 facing some challenging rust issues, eBay’s unbeatable selection means it is both easy and simple for these restorers to bring their cars back to life. I personally can’t wait to see the end result”.
