Text to Register your mobile with the TPS to stop spam calls

Text to register with the TPSThe Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and Ofcom have launched a “Text to Register” service for mobile phone user. It enables you to quickly add your mobile phone number to the UK’s official ‘do not call’.

It is illegal to make unsolicited sales and marketing calls to numbers registered with the TPS, unless the caller has a person’s consent to do so. It’s fairly well known that you can register your land line phone number, but not so many people are aware that you can register mobile phone numbers.

Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) say that registering your phone number with the TPS on average results in a 31% drop in spam phone calls.

Of course that still leaves you with the 69% of calls from the out and out scammers and scoundrels who pester us daily. The TPS can’t do a thing about these, many of which now originate from overseas to make reporting them to the ICO a waste of time.

The TPS also will do nothing to stop the deluge of spam text messages you likely receive.

Still, a drop in spam calls of almost a third isn’t to be sniffed at, so if you want to register a mobile on the ‘do not call’ list, simply text TPS and your email address to 78070.
