Amazon clamp down on dodgy USB-C cables
Amazon has announced that they will be banning USB-C cables for sale and sellers breaking the new regulations could well have their accounts suspended.
The new USB-C cables are handy if you want to charge up devices faster but dodgy cables can fry your USB port and also seriously damage your computer. So Amazon have stepped in and banned them.
The cables ban is, in part, thanks to a campaign by Google engineer Benson Leung who has been testing the cables for sale on Amazon. In the course of his investigation one shoddy cable zapped his own laptop. As Leung says of the change in policy from Amazon: “Really great news, but we all have to continue to be vigilant and call out any bad products we find on Amazon and other stores (both online and brick and mortar) as we find them.”
So far it seems that this new regulation regarding USB-C cables is valid in the US. You can find the relevant page here.
Amazon have not banned USB-C cables, amazon have banned the sale of non-compliant USB-C cables:
Under banned items:
Any USB-C™ (or USB Type-C™) cable or adapter product that is not compliant with standard specifications issued by “USB Implementers Forum Inc.”
