Amazon to launch $50 6in tablet

There are reports that Amazon is about to launch a dinky 6 inch tablet for fifty dollars. If the device is any good, it’s not hard to see that it will be popular. It sounds like a great starter tablet for young people, for instance. And a great little present come Christmas.

With a device priced so low, it’s a throwaway price after all, it seems obvious that the idea here isn’t on making money on the tablet itself. It’s a way of knitting price conscious Amazon customers into the various Amazon programmes that they offer already. It is also very well priced compared to Kindle products and so is an obvious ereader option. This is a device on which to use Amazon Music and Amazon Video too. And perhaps also be that device you use purely at home to buy via Amazon. Ideal just to keep in the kitchen as you build your Amazon Fresh shopping list, perhaps?

Like with Prime, Amazon are quite clever about being the front-of-mind vendor and service when it comes to what they develop. A decent little tablet at this price is an extension of that.
