PayPal says: get to know your Chinese Cross-border buyers

PayPal is encouraging western sellers to look east and acquaint themselves with army of keen Chinese buyers ready to do business with European and American sellers.

You can read the full report here: Get to know your Chinese Cross-border buyers.

But what’s the pitch? It’s quite simple. Chinese ecommerce is growing strongly and Chinese buyers like buying from the west because they perceive that such goods represent good value and are likely to be authentic.

Paypal’s director of Global Merchant & Cross-Border Trade Initiatives, Melissa O’Malley says: Our research with Nielsen shows that when buying from the US, more than half of Chinese online consumers have done so for “higher product quality” (55%), “authenticity” and “value” (both 53%).

The research shows there is clearly a high level of trust in US goods. Consumers in China know that when buy directly from the United States, not only are they going to get a high-quality product, but the product will be authentic. This is especially reassuring when they consider buying domestically, where many online Chinese marketplaces face ongoing issues with selling counterfeit goods.”

PayPal has a challenge on its hands to take on Alipay in China but it looks like they’re having a go.
