City Link goes into administration

According to news from Ernst & Young, parcel delivery firm City Link has gone into administration.

Apparently operations will be suspended between now and the 29th and it’s reported that no redundancies are imminent amongst the 2727 people who work for the firm.

At time of writing, there is no alert or news on the City Link website.

We will report more as we get it.

    Very sad for all involved. At least they will have fulfilled their Christmas deliveries and well done to them for that.

    At a time when on-line sales continue to grow this must mean that CL failed to keep up either at the technology level or at the price (which may also be down to the technology).

    Who knows how the parcel delivery business will shape going forward? Interestingly the Doddle shop on Norwich Station that was readied in November has not opened. Second thoughts?

      Good riddance to CL, its about time.

      They are hopeless, allow divers to steal parcels, refuse to properly investigate driver theft, etc.

      They are a victim on their own endemic and internal failures and i’m amazed they lasted so long. Google them and you will be shocked and what you read and how CL have covered it up for so long.

      The only unfortunate thing is some honest employees are now paying the price for the dishonest employees – well maybe the honest employees should have done something instead of turning a blind eye to what they knew was happening around them.

      They make Yodel look professional and I for one have absolutely no sympathy for anyone at CL.

      PS: I speak from experience. Personally, in one single day, I am £1,400 out of pocket due to their theiving employees. Sack the lot and wind it up!

      I’m all for Christmas charity but CL is beyond the pall. Call me the Grinch if you like but lets get real, that company has allowed itself to become thieving central and provided a service much worse than even Yodel, and thats really something.

      I can just picture all those “poor and about to be laid off employees” sitting with their thieving colleagues in the canteen and giggling over their cups of coffee about how they nicked this worth X or that worth Y.

      Maybe now all those “poor and about to be laid off employees” will rethink their ethics and not be suprised at the consequenses of “turning a blind eye to their mates” thieving behaviour and at the same time basically also letting the company fall into decline. Whats worse is Management clearly knew about these issues but choose to do nothing about it. Well now they are all in the unemployed boat and probably looking at a career change as from what I’ve heard, CL employees are tainted. Put CL on your CV and you are immediately viewed with suspision so consequently many of the other carriers avoid employing them.

      As the saying goes, you make your bed and then you lie in it…… But Im sure all the thieving giggles over canteen coffee will make being on the dole (or whatever its now called!) all worthwhile.

      I have no sympathty for any of them and expect mass redundencies to be announced shortly

    Just rooting around for more details and will write some things up but obviously CL has been struggling for some time.

    I really feel for the people who have been affected. Awful news on Christmas day for staff.

    We have about 25 parcels in their network currently (Christmas Eve collections, missed deliveries and in transit to InPost UK lockers)

    Such as shame for the staff workforce. Our driver is great and personally never had any issues with them.

    Will be interesting to see what elements get bought by others.

    Potential for Amazon Logistics to literally gain national coverage overnight for example

    I wonder if the demise of Citylink is due to the rise of the low-cost budget couriers who make use of local “independent” subcontractors to deliver the parcels at a low wage.

    Being unionised their staff are probably paid more than their competitors resulting in their business being less competitive. The race to the bottom amongst the courier pricing was probably the last straw for them.

      City link also use self employed sub contractors ,
      This is no real surprise The shock is the timeing of the announcement,
      City link have been losing money for years rentokil unloaded the company for a £1 in 2013

      Looking into it further I found an article saying they replaced their employed staff with independent contractors.

      It would be good if HMRC investigate the use of independent contractors within the courier industry. It would be interesting to put a few of the courier contracts through the Employment Status Indicator ( http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/calcs/esi.htm ) to see if they really count as self employed.

      The fact is they don’t get paid enough.

      but then if the courier companies got out of the race to the bottom everyone would get a better service.

      Or perhaps the world will change and everyone will stop wanting something for nothing ( it is christmas after all)

      The problem with CL is no one (except the seller and customer) cares if it gets deliverd.

      Theft and other problems are endemic and Management have done nothing to resolve these long standing issues.

      Search Google for some shocking threads – one is from Steve, an ex-CL driver who said “Should he steal MORE than one package per day then apparently he gets a fine”. So, dohh, you’re saying that drivers can get away with nicking one item a day? This is crazy.

      Its interesting to note that when you try to view the actual posting in the thread its been deleted (presumably because CL lawyers had it removed) but in Google search results it still appears to this day (yes, I just checked)!

      The second result is:

      And it quotes this Forum:

      Sadly, after searching the Forum (HUNDREDS of comments across many pages) you won’t find Steve’s comment (clearly it has been removed for some reason) but the sheer quantity of negative material is certainly revealing and illustrates why CL is not trusted by many.

      CL is a classic case of no one caring so why should anyone be suprised, or care, that the company has ceased trading?

      IMO: The closure of CL was caused by employees not caring or being dishonest so its for the best. I have absolutely no symphaty. They brought this upon themselves and online business is better off for their demise.

    This is always what happens at this time of year. There is always a news item about redundancies just after Christmas; there has been every year for as long as I can remember and I’m 52! I don’t know why the media love the Christmas redundancy stories but they really really do. Like the stories about exams getting too easy, every year after the results are announced. It’s part of the annual news cycle I think.

      2,727 to be precise and given that the honest employees turned a blind eye to the thieving ones I have no symphaty – they are all involved, either directly or indirectly so all deserve the consequenses of apathy.

      When you work for a service company there is no excuse for ignoring the bad actions of others as all issues impact everyone. Want to keep your job? Do a good job. Simple really..

      Personally, CL cost me £1,400 in one day by a driver stealing my 3 parcels. Despite reporting the loss within 36 hours it transpired that no answers were given and nor was any action taken. Whats worse is that when initially reporting the loss and speaking for ages to someone called Thomas in CS, who promissed to fully investigate, we finished the call but I didn’t hang up and instead muted my handset and listened. Thomas also didn’t hang up, he simply placed his headset on the desk and I could then hear him telling his office mates, and all of them laughing, when he told them “I was a whinging c**t, how he didn’t care, nothing would happen anyway, and I was wasting my time”. Yes this really happened, for real.

      IMO: Sack the lot and let this be something that others learn from. All employees in any company have a duty of care and responsibility. If you do a bad job don’t be suprised if you end up unemployed. CL is case in point.

    Surely what has happened to City Link is what happens everywhere. The weakest go to the Wall. The Strong and well run and well financed survive. Most of the Postings blame the Drivers. But in my experience where there is weak and sloppy Management who are incapable of running a business then there will be employees taking advantage.

    Obviously we all saw the dishonest Drivers and Uncaring Attitude. But the chances are the rot, as in a fish, started at the head(the Management) and spread through the body of the business.

      If you look it up you will find that it has long been said that rot in a fish starts at the head and similarly that rot in a business starts at the top with rubbish Directors and Executives. If the Directors and Executives are rubbish only interested in themselves and their interests and not the business then the staff further down the company will take advantage and similarly be on the fiddle or not care.
