Free auction listings on eBay UK 15th and 16th February

By Dan Wilson February 15, 2014 - 4:47 pm

This weekend private sellers can list up to 100 items free using the auction format.

Full terms here. But in short, the blurb says: “Create up to 100 listing(s) with a starting price of £1 or more in an eligible category during the promotion period using the auction-style format and you won’t pay an insertion fee for each listing during the promotion period.

Feature fees and final value fees will still apply. The number of listings eligible under this promotion may be less where seller restrictions apply.”

It looks like eBay have knocked together a new page hoping to attract new sellers with an FAQs and talking heads that leads straight to the simplified selling form. It also encourages people to download the mobile app. Check out the page here.

By invitation only. Which means that eBay do not need to publicise the offer in the Announcements area.

For all we know every day could be a FLD!

It is definite that Not Every Day is a Free Listing Day. This should be obvious to even such as JD because if people are listing every day then they would notice if some days they paid Listing Fees and others they did not. I for one would notice because I do regularly list most days one or two items and only continue to list if I do not get charged.

As far as Free Listing Days being invitation only. I do not ever remember specifically seeing an invitation to me to participate. However I have noticed the small flashing box on the screen telling me and I suppose every other ebayer who has logged on that day that it is a Free Listing day.

Thanks for the info – JD is correct – since the new year eBayUK are now limiting their promotions to “Invited Users Only” – I just tried to use this offer – as I usually would – but unfortunately my name isn’t now on their special guest list.. Its tricky to know why I don’t meet their criteria – I am a private seller with excellent feedback and ratings built up over 15 years.. Maybe its because i’m wearing trainers..

I do know that instead of working away trying to list 100 items this weekend I will be watching the Winter Olympics instead – so I guess its not all bad..

      Warren,

Sorry to hear that your lucky number didn’t come up. I suggest that you ring CS and ask exactly why you are not worthy (of the current offer).

If it is not for a reason that you find rational I think that we would all like to know!

Sorry to see that you do not qualify somehow for the Free Listing Weekend. Might I suggest that you have a look at your Seller Dashboard to see if there is any problem with your current status. There are a number of reasons why you might not qualify such as having adverse DSR’s. But whatever they are should show up on your Dashboard. If you feel that there is a mistake it is far too late to do anything about it for this weekend but you could take it up with CS for the next Free Listing Event whether it is a Midweek or a Weekend. I am not saying that CS would cancel whatever the problem is but maybe you could get them to look at it again.

Hello Chris, Thanks for the interest – I cant see anything wrong on my dash – maybe i’ll get in touch with them and ask.. It might just be they’ve decided to only offer it to certain members..

I spoke to a couple of people – this is what i got…

“I would surely explain the rationale behind this which will further help you
in understanding this. As you might be aware, we introduce promotions frequently on alternate weekends for entire community.

Let me explain that this promotion is different than what we’ve usually. In
this promotion, eBay sent invitations to inactive sellers randomly.
These promotions encourage them to start listing more items and get
accustomed to selling on eBay. The system identifies such sellers
automatically and the invitations are sent to their registered email
      address.

This is one of the reasons why the information wasn’t available on
announcement board. Rest assured, introducing promotions for entire community is an integral part of eBay and we do introduce it frequently over the weekends. Please don’t be disheartened, I would suggest you to keep an eye on the announcement board to get yourself updated.”

I pointed out that there have been NO promotions on the eBay UK general notice board this year that I could see.. in fact all the notice board says is two general maintenance notices and a note about recent UK floods.. at which point I got cut-off…

It sounds like they’re testing stuff.

But please do still alert TameBay if you notice anything promo wise. And we will publish it as soon as we can.

      Dan – if I hear of one then I surely will – it’s a fab site…

By the way I should point out that last year I took part in several “hidden” free listing days and weekends.. These could well have been a run-up to these new invitation only ones.. i.e. they were there – but unpublicised – I only discovered them by accident when I listed something on a thursday and was charged no listing fee because of a promotion.. No offer was shown when I looked on the announcement board.

The offers continued on quite a few weekends and thursdays between the announced promotions – it was just a case of try listing something and see what happens.. Maybe they sent emails to selected users about these – but they were open to everyone who qualified..

so I contacted another person who told me something completely different – they said it was because my account was showing up as US registered…

My acct has always been the same with UK details etc.. He kept on telling me I must have registered with the US site by mistake – or my acct.. had been transferred to the US site for some reason..

Well my details have always been the same – I think the truth is that I registered in 1999 – way before there were any “local” ebay sites such as eBay UK.. So by default I was registered on the US Site..

Anyway he didn’t seem to understand this.. He seemed to think there had always been separate sites.. I went through things to change my account to be UK regd. Then he told me now I would qualify for UK promotions.. and this was the reason why I had never been able to use UK promotions in the past..

I then pointed out that up until Jan 1st this year I had been regularly using all the UK promos for two years.. This seemed to confuse him.. He kept repeating that the reason I had never been able to use UK promotions in the past was because I was registered in the US..

So – I am still in the dark – both op’s told me my acct. was fine – my details definitely hadn’t changed since I joined.. So I can’t see any reason why I would be suddenly excluded from offers beginning this year..

So could it just be like the first lady said – they are only sending offers out now to people that dont sell very often.. And the UK site has decided not to have any general offers for everyone so far this year.. Maybe..

Just checked ebay and again it is winking at me that this weekend, the 22/23rd February, is a Free Listing Weekend. Before coming on Tamebay I tried to list an item and it went through at Nil Listing Fees so I think that it is safe to assume that I am correct in this.

It is only a week since the last Free Listing Weekend so the items that you listed last weekend which have not sold have not gone through the sausage machine. So unless you have 100 items in Unsold you will need to search up and list some new items.
