eBay UK Free Listings this weekend

By Dan Wilson February 23, 2014 - 3:41 am

Thank you to all the Tamebay readers who have alerted me to this: it is great to get the tip off.

There are free auction listings to be had for private sellers this weekend. As usual, terms apply and you can find them here. It’s not clear if this is open to all private sellers, so have a go to make sure you are eligible.

Happy selling.

Well – I just tried – but no joy for me still despite the recent lengthy conversations with eBay support and their re-assuranced that i’m not being excluded.. After 15 years am feeling very unloved by eBay indeed..

I just chatted with eBay support again about these new eBay listing offers.. I’ve not been able to use any offers since xmas – previously I regularly used free listing weekends..

A guy from eBay UK Billing told me

“Yes, you are correct. The system randomly selects sellers. I hope you will be one of them next time. :)”

    and

“Do not worry. It is the system that randomly selects sellers.”

So he says its a pure luck thing whether you can use their offers now – not sure I believe it – it must be targeted in some way surely.. ?? Otherwise it wouldn’t make sense from their side..

If it is purely random then its not overly comforting for me – when I was a baby my mum purchased some premium bonds for me.. 40 years later I’m still waiting to win something.. Know what I mean..

I find it very hard to believe that the system picks out sellers because this would indicate that there will be occasions when particular sellers are not picked out. The only times I have been excluded have been when I was being punished by ebay for having been targeted by a Crook. On every other occasion when there has been a Free Listing Event I have been able to list sales items for free.

I have suggested previously that you have a look at your Dashboard. Did you do this? If you have not may I suggest that you take the minute or so and have a look at it. If there is anything adverse it should show up on this as should anything else that could stop you being able to enjoy a Free Listing Event.

Going back to Sellers being somehow chosen. I logged onto ebay before 9am Saturday. The box was flashing that it was a Free Listing Weekend. It did not say anything about it being only for the chosen few. So I relisted an item. It went through at Nil Charge. This is exactly what has happened each and every time(with the exceptions of those occasions I was being punished by ebay for having been the innocent victim of a Crook).

So I would certainly suggest that it is worthwhile checking on your Dashboard.

Hello Chris, thanks for the advice – but I have already checked all my information and dashboard – it all looks fine – I am a private seller – I have positive feedback approaching 2000 built up over 15 years. I do not have any other accounts and to my knowledge have had no dealings with dubious users..

My Seller ratings are all good – average of 4.9 in all – no buyer protection cases.. I have asked eBay customer service now five times and they say my account is all in good standing etc. and assure me that I am not being deliberately excluded from anything… Mind you – I’m not sure how really aware customer service staff are of whats actually going on regarding anything at ebay. I think their role is mainly just to re-assure users..

I think the fact that the UK site have stopped putting any general promotions on their noticeboard is a bit of a clue.. They’ve probably decided to give promotions now to only those who they think need encouragement to list (one customer service girl told me something like this) in the hope that users excluded from promos will list items anyway , be charged to list and generate them more revenue. There’s probably a formula – like number of sales over past x number of months or something – and if you exceed it you cant take part..

In practice though – well i’m not listing much – all the things I usually would – the kind of stuff thats low value or you have no idea if it will sell.. thats all stopped.. so my sales and commission I pay have dropped by 70%..

I wonder if it might be an idea to set up another Private Seller Account. If you get Free Listings on that then over a fairly short period of time to put all your new items onto that and run down the existing Seller Account and then drop it.

I only have one small account and I also have a feedback of just over 2000 but earned in only 5 years. Yet apart from when ebay was punishing me for being the victim of a crook I seem to be able to take advantage of every one of the Free Listings.

Your level of activity is very high indeed for a supposed private seller.
Some might say you should register as a business seller as you appear to be trading on eBay.

Firstly what has my level of transactions got to do with Cambridge_Blue?. In the past you have stated that everybody in Cornwall is subsidised to the hilt even though the Governments own figures show that Urban areas such as Cambridge enjoy considerably greater subsidies than Rural Areas such as Cornwall. Also you have stated that Everybody in Cornwall is a Mass Murderer by your statement that Everybody in Cornwall is a ‘Wrecker’. In case anybody does not know what a ‘Wrecker’ was the following is a short description.

In the days of Sail. During a storm a Captain of a ship would be desperate to find a sheltered anchorage. The Wreckers were supposed to put out lights. Some on land to signify buildings and some on boats or buoys to signify boats in a sheltered anchorage. The Captain would make a run for it only to find his ship wrecked on the rocks.

The ‘Wreckers’ would rob and pillage the wreck and kill any survivors. According to Cambridge_Blue this was the ‘Religion’ of Cornwall today. There is little if any Historic Justification for ‘Wrecking’ ever having existed although it does appear in various novels(work of fiction) which does not mean that it ever happened. Yet Cambridge_Blue in an earlier posting stated that it continued to happen today.

So let us get back to my 2000 Feedback. Firstly I buy and sell on my account so some of these represent my purchases.

Secondly a Feedback does not have a monetary value. If the transaction is for 99p or £100 a Feedback is still a Feedback. Surely any intelligent person would understand this. So the definition of a Commercial Trader as against a Private Seller should be based upon the monetary value of transactions and not that 2000 people who have either bought from me or have sold to me have found it to be a pleasant experience.

I refuse to believe that. eBay would never do random selection. CVarefully determined cohorts so they can analyse the data, but random. No.

    Breaking news:
‘eBay has become a lottery’. LOL

  • Gary

If the lottery numbers were as random as the number of free listing emails I receive then I would not be posting messages here! :-)

Not talking about what you see for FLD.

I’m talking about what eBay have actually said!

  • Neil

We never get the FLD or promo of extra free listings on any of our accounts. After a round about and slightly coded conversation with Ireland, it turns out that we list too frequently and spread out our listings across the month, so “the system assumes you don’t need encouragement”…

That sounds much more like it. These are incentives to list to encourage sellers to list more. Based on behaviours. Not random

Remember Free Listing Days are for Private Sellers not for Business Sellers. There have been promotions for Business Sellers but not as many. sf you have multiple id’s the and accounts it is likely that they are business accounts. I have suggested before that if in doubt check your Dashboard. If you are registered as business accounts then that is the reason why you do not enjoy Free Listing Days.

This might surpise you but most of us on here do know whether we are a business or private seller unlike you it would appear.

Its bad when somebody does not know how to spell their own name.

I suppose that there must be a description of whether or not a particular ‘business’ was either a Private Trader or a Commercial ‘business’. I would have thought that it was based upon overall turnover or perhaps overall Profit. Cambridge_Blue has previously made out that it should be based upon total number of Feedbacks both for Buying and Selling.

Feedbacks may be a sign that you are a good ebayer especially if you are running a steady 100% and that the write up is excellent. However a Feedback has no Financial Value.

So I would support the Overall Turnover or Profit as the deciding factor. But I do not know if there is an official figure. But could a ‘Business’ really operate on an annual turnover of say £1k, or £3k or £5k? Or would Cambridge_Blue set it at a higher figure say £100k or £150k as being the minimum to be a Commercial ‘business’. I would be interested if he could clarify this then those of us with an annual turnover below the figure that he set could get away from his continuous attacks on us because we have such and such number of Feedbacks or whatever.

As I have stated so often in the past. I am in semi retirement. I have health problems and I have over the years cut back and cut back. So now I operate on a very low level. It is just about possible that my next trip to the Hospital in April to see the Specialist may produce the actual diagnosis of what is wrong with my health and a cure for it. However I doubt it. So I will continue to operate at a low level and no doubt continue to suffer attacks from Cambridge_Blue because he will continue to claim that I am really Big Business.

I am 63 years old. Surely Cambridge_Blue has relatives or friends of a similar age. If he does surely he realises that at 63 years old bits of me are rapidly wearing out. I am not as able as I used to be. In my case I have a couple of problems which severely limit me. One is incurable(back problems) the other I am still hopeful of a) finding out what causes it(lung problems-I have breathing problems) and b) a cure for it.

Unfortunately no invite for us (as of yet..)

      Thanks JD.

Well this weekend 1st/2nd March are also Free Listing Weekend. I saw the usual flashing box so I tried to list an item and it took it without any listing fees so I think that we can take it that it is confirmed.

So if you qualify go ahead and list your usual 100 items for Free.
