My toddler bought it on eBay

Baby SmartphoneThe Daily Mail today carries yet another of the endless “I didn’t buy it, my kid bid on eBay” stories. A one year old was playing on her father’s smartphone and managed to bid and win a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite.

There’s a happy ending for both the seller and the little girl this time though. Rather than backing out of the sale the father has paid for the beat up wreck and intends restoring it to it’s former glory in time for his daughters high school graduation or 16th birthday. He was probably motivated by the fact it was only $225 (about £150), but it does make a change to see a parent cough up for their own carelessness.

The first the parents knew of their daughter’s purchase was when the email arrived from eBay congratulating them on the winning bid. I have to say kudos to them for stumping up the cash, which is quite unusual, but I remain mystified as to why parents allow their toddlers to play with their £500 smartphones.

Quite apart from not wanting my phone back covered in dribble and grime, there’s no telling what a toddler (or older children) will do to my phone so quite simply they don’t get to play with it. Apart from anything else I have this sneaking suspicion that they’re a lot more tech savvy than me and I’ll end up with a load of apps and settings that they want but I don’t!

Do yourself a favour, buy your baby a toy smartphone, don’t let them play with the real thing.

Call me an old cynic, but this smacks of ebay hyperbole and cheap publicity….we’ve all had buyers pull out of a sale because *my 7 year old was playing around on the computer* type excuse. Now ebay can sight this as a genuine occurrence…..really?…..road of cobras! :)
