Alibaba to meet with Australian eBay sellers

By Chris Dawson June 23, 2010 - 11:02 pm

alibabaAlibaba, long term rival to eBay, is starting to muscle in on their territory down under. At the annual PESA Australia conference Alibaba is named as a Silver Sponsor alongside eBay and PayPal who are Platinum Sponsors.

Alibaba have recently made moves to accept PayPal on their AliExpress wholesale marketplace so it won’t be the first time the two companies have met. It will however be the first time many eBay sellers have had the opportunity to meet with Alibaba.

I’d be very afraid of Alibaba.
They are a huge Chinese site.

    “Alibaba and the Forty Thieves?”

Alibaba have, how shall I put this, a LOUSY REPUTATION. you ONLY HAVE TO GO INTO FORUMS & THERE ARE TALES OF DODGY SELLERS, COUNTERFIT GOODS…..THE LIST JUST GOES ON & ON.
But from eBays’ point, I suppose, ‘better the devil you know, etc’.

So basically they have the same reputation ebay has with most people?

To be fair Alibaba have done a hell of a lot in recent years to clear up their site and improve seller standards. However as is always the case you’ll always hear the few with a previous bad experience shouting the loudest – after all no one is going to tell all their competitors what a great source of stock they’ve found 😉

alibaba is rife with fake goods. Any brand name you search is fake from nike to rolex to colgate to coca cola to gillette.

Many sellers are also people who only take payment by western union. I’ll say no more…..

Other than don’t be tempted, you will be conned, or you may find customs will keep your goods as they are counterfeit, even if you were expecting genuine merchandise, it won’t be.

One of the tricks is to also give you genuine goods when you make a sample purchase but they won’t be legit when you buy in bulk.

Best bet is to buy unknown brands and find a product of decent quality. When I was importing less than 1 in 10 of the products I tried were worth even selling on eBay or I’d be swamped in returns and chargebacks.

In China Alibaba is really a great company which is trying to promote small/meium sized business. They have good ethical standards. Check out their policies on the web.
