Two more new blogs for eBay
eBay used to be criticised for not communicating enough. It seems they’re trying to kill this once and for all with the launch of not only eBay Ink, but two more blogs.
eBay Insider is billed as “your source for what’s hot, hip and happeningâ€, with focus on fashion, pop culture, gadgets and toys, and home design. It has potential, but I don’t think that potential is yet being realised. For example this post about dresses has absolutely no links to either the designers it’s talking about, or – better – to eBay searches for the same things. Rule number one: make it easy for people to shop.
What Gives is a “social goodworking blogâ€. It has posts about Autism: The Musical, water-bourne disease and environmentally conscious shopping bags, and then this post that has the look of a mission statement about it.
Both of these seem to have pretty good potential to build community around themselves. I like that they all have multiple posters; I like the two areas – shopaholism and greenism – that they’ve chosen to focus on; most of all, I like that they’re actually allowing on-blog comments. Someone at eBay finally got blogging!
So where does this leave The Chatter? I have a lot of affection for that blog, despite its having been buried under a wave of novelty in recent days. Its seemingly rather random collection by a variety of eBay employees – none of whom was employed specifically to blog – did seem to have an authenticity of its own. It felt like a genuine snapshot of the concerns of SJC employees: some fun, some serious, some important policy-making and some complete trivia. That very mix of people creates a feeling that we’re seeing the inner workings of the company, and I’m not convinced that one PR man can replicate, let alone replace, that. Please keep chattering, people.
