Early bird tickets, available til April 9th, are $99; those with student ID can get in for just $49. The conference runs from June 8th to 10th in San José, California. There’s also what looks like a pretty sweet hotel deal if you don’t already have your room booked.

What is Dev Con?
It’s eBay’s event for developers working with their platform (not for buyers and sellers… mostly).
eBay says: “You’ll spend three days learning, networking and getting inspired by some of the most respected visionaries in e-commerce. You’ll also get neck-deep in code, flex your development and entrepreneurial muscles, and take your game to the next level.”

I went to some of the Dev Con events in Chicago in 2008, and can heartily recommend them. The schedule was an interesting mix of technical and marketing, covering not only developments in the eBay API and what can be done with it, but how to sell your eBay app once you’ve developed it. Future changes on the selling platform were covered more frankly and less defensively than is often the case at seller-focused events.

Two years on from the launch of Project Echo, and with PayPal also running a Developer Network, I can only imagine things will be more interesting still.

ChannelAdvisor have announced the speaker line up for the Catalyst conference scheduled for the 12th-13th April. Speakers from Dell, OfficeMax, The Hut Group (much loved as one of the eBay Outlets) and Speedo will join more familiar speakers from eBay, Amazon and Google.

If you’ve not been to a Catalyst event before it’s not as many think a chance for ChannelAdvisor to plug their services, but is an opportunity to take a serious look at the state of the ecommerce landscape.

Not to be missed on the first day is the live consumer panel – 10 real life people that buy online, but other than that aren’t involved in ecommerce. Without any inside industry knowledge they’ll tell what makes them buy, how they progress from a search and when and why they’ll make the final payment and exactly what you need to do to capture their business.

Places are limited this year to 250, so if you want to attend book early to avoid disappointment.

Do you have arguments with your partner over clutter in your house? If so (and if you’re in the US) Kijiji is offering the chance to sort it out once and for all.

They’re running a “Clutter Court” giving you the opportunity to have a consultation from one of their “Clutter Judges” who’ll come to your home and reorganise you living space so that you can live in harmony with your partner.

Something tells me though, if you do win your partner might not be too pleased to know that you’ve publicised their prized possessions as “clutter”, so be warned – you might end up with a clutter free house but you might also incur the wrath of your partner…. Is it worth the agro?

eBay Radio is run out of the US and largely focuses on eBay.com issues, but for the last couple of months I’ve been invited to call in each Tuesday to give a European flavour to the show and talk about issues affecting sellers in the UK and Europe. I’ll be on eBay radio again at 7.30pm UK time on Tuesday if you want to listen in.

A couple of weeks ago I talked about DSRs, how eBay are removing low unfair low DSR scores for some sellers, and how the minimum performance standards, coming into effect on April 1st, unfairly penalise low volume sellers. You can listen again to this segment (opens as mp3 file), in the eBay Radio On-Demand archives.

A couple of interesting points came out of this – firstly eBay have not seen the decrease in bad buyer experiences that they hoped for. They’re tightening up on seller standards because they’re still seeing too many dodgy sellers, but I fear this could still lead to a new breed of “dolphins” caught in the net.

The second slightly more reassuring note (if it happens) is that according to Griff, falling below the minimum standards doesn’t automatically mean a seller will be penalised. eBay will consider each seller on a case by case basis before applying sanctions.

eBay Radio is a good forum for airing concerns and if you want to call in I’d recommend using SkypeOut as it’s literally pennies a minute for calls to the US. There are normally two shows a week, one at 7pm – 9pm GMT on Tuesdays, which has more formal set content. The second program starts at 11pm GMT on Thursdays and is devoted to 2 hours of listeners calls. You can can dial in to both programs on US telephone number 888-708-6226.

It’s only two months into the New Year and already there are changes happening in the ecommerce industry. The country is out of recession, eBay is changing by rolling back mandatory free post in the UK, rolling out SIF in core in the US and raising minimum seller standards. Amazon is steadfastly bucking the trend and every seller I speak to says sales on the “river” are up.

The big question is where should you be focusing your efforts in 2010, will eBay changes close the gap on Amazon and accelerate growth? eBay UK is doing pretty well helped mainly by the weak pound making exports attractive to Europe but eBay worldwide has at last halted the decline in sales and is back in positive growth.

Tomorrow Scot Wingo of ChannelAdvisor is holding a webinar, where he promises to look back at 2009 and see what happened in the world of ecommerce and specific channels like paid search, comparison shopping engines and marketplaces like eBay, Amazon and Buy.com. Then he’ll look at some 2010 forecasts, January results and some announcements / data already shaking the ecommerce world. Finally, he’ll talk about ‘emerging’ channels such as social media and mobile and how they are starting to impact on ecommerce.

If you want to listen in the webinar starts at 7:00pm GMT on the 11th February and should last around an hour.

eBay On Location bookings have opened for Atlanta to be held on 19th – 20th March 2010. There will be a couple more events in Dallas (7th – 8th May) and Chicago (July 9th – 10th) with the finale in San Jose on September 1st – 2nd where eBay will celebrate their 15th anniversary.

Unlike it’s predecessor eBay Live!, which was billed as the biggest eBay event of the year, eBay On Location is aimed at small business and part-time eBay sellers to help them kick start and grow their eBay businesses.

If you’re already an established eBay Top Rated PowerSeller, you might want to bend the ear of some eBay employees, but I don’t see it as a “must attend” event if you’re already well versed in the art of eBaying. However if you’re starting out then it’s a great opportunity to get to grips with selling formats, eBay shops, ramping up sales and customer service.

The San Jose event will be the one not to miss, purely because eBay are bound to do something special for their 15th anniversary, but if you’re tempted by any of the other venues I’d plump for Chicago – simply because it’s a beautiful city and you can write the trip off as a business expense

For a paltry $45 ($35 if you book early) if you live close to a venue it looks well worth the money. If you don’t live close to one of the eBay On Location events then travel to either Chicago or San Jose.

I attended the Drapers/Retail Week Ecommerce Summit 2010 for the second year running last week and to be honest it felt a bit strange, being what seemed the only independent company there.

Mingling amongst the likes of Schuh, Sole Trader, Calvin Klein, Woolworths, House of Fraser and more big names, I started to feel out of my depth but then I thought why should I, it would be great to learn what these guys are learning as I bet I can implement any changes quicker than them and that’s the good thing about being an independent company.

There was some interesting information from IMRG:
•	Online growth in December 2009 was up 17%
•	41% of consumers plan to spend more online next Christmas
•	Christmas day sales £132m: up 29% on 2008. Fewer customers but higher basket spend
•	Strong growth sectors in 2009 were Clothing, Footwear & Accessories
•	Overall conversion rates were down in 2009 due to customers researching more, which to me indicates more research needs to be done by companies as well
•	An odd & interesting bit of information is that across the board online-only stores saw a decrease of 7.6% in December versus multi channel retailers who were up 13%. This was an indication that high street retailers are getting their act together with connecting their online business & bricks & mortar stores
•	Interesting eBay fact that in December across all eBay countries 1.5million items were purchase on a mobile phone!

Communities for websites were also a big part of the summit with many discussions and presentations on the use of social media, reviews and how best to interact with customers. Did you know if all the registered users on Facebook lived in a country it would be the fourth largest country in the world!!!

There were some interesting presentations that talked about successful campaigns such as Art of the Trench by Burberry, this was good to see a top design brand connecting with customers though communities such as facebook & it also created an awful lot of press over the site. ASOS were also mentioned a great deal for the use of their own community, Facebook and Twitter, which is always good to follow.

How I look at communities is you can really use it to sell, sell, sell: it’s a place to connect with your customers more, an extension of your customer service if you will. Facebook and Twitter can give your online business a personal feel which is what online retail is sometimes lacking.

There were also discussions on bloggers, and in fact we had the chance to meet a panel of them. It was interesting to learn that the public are trusting bloggers’ and reviewers’ opinions more & more. That’s why if you have a website it is essential to add reviews to your products.

Images were also a massive part of discussions including a presentation from one of the creators of Adobe 7, these are the guys that offer the software for imaging and video to most of the top sites in the US and UK. In a survey offered by them, customers ranked importance of images as

•	Quality of image 94%
•	Alternative images 88%
•	Zoom 85%

At the end of the day no matter how much content you offer a customer the image is key to selling an item. Make it clear, offer alternative views and increasing in popularity is showing the items in context, i.e. on a model. Video is really helping with this too, with clothing shown on catwalks. Some top sites for images are:

www.jcpennys.com
www.asos.com
www.mywardrobe.com
www.converse.com

An interesting US site called www.blackcountry.com. These guys have added the ability for customers to upload their own images of camping equipment. The company adds the standard product pic then customers can upload their own giving better views of the product but also real customer opinions and reviews too!

It would be easy to dismiss all of this and say ‘We haven’t the money or the time’ but for any business – large or small, on eBay or just a website – elements of this are vital to your growth. Even if you spend an hour a week improving the quality of your images it is a start, but if you are looking to really grow then spend time and a little money on creating a community around your site. We started really working on this in November and the signs are very, very good on increasing turnover!

There are five auctions ranging from a driving experience with fifteen minutes of hot laps with Mika at the wheel, right up to a full 60 minutes one-to-one personal driving tuition from Mika.

The auction prizes have been donated by door-to-door delivery company myHermes, to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity through eBay for Charity and run until Sunday 14th February. Mika Hakkinen, who is a brand ambassador for myHermes said “I am a father of two myself and appreciate the importance of the work which Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity does for sick children. I sincerely hope that we will be able to raise a lot of funds”.

So if you’re a budding racing driver or simply fancy tearing round the track at Mercedes-Benz World in a 6.2 litre V8 Mercedes AMG with a Formula 1 legend at the wheel get bidding now. You might have to outbid Sue though, she’s a big fan of Mika and wanted to write this post but it would have been too XXX rated

All of the auctions also include a 3 course lunch with Mika, as well as an off-road driver training session with a Mercedes-Benz driving specialist. The driving sessions will take place on the 24th February, just 10 days after the auctions finish at Mercedes-Benz world in Surrey. If you’re planning to bid make sure you give yourself the day off work!

Back in December Parcel2Go ran a competition to win all of your courier fees paid for a month, and the winner was Andrew Davis from My Green Lighting. They specialise in supplying energy saving lighting and bulbs, and not just the regular sizes you can buy in the supermarket but also carry the more unusual fittings.

Andrew said that winning was a complete surprise, they didn’t know they’d entered the competition, but everyone that loaded their Parcel2Go account with at least £20.00 during December was entered, and My Green Lighting is a regular customer and already use Parcel2Go daily.

Andrew was naturally delighted to win, and this company benefited on their bottom line from the savings. They already offer competitive delivery charges and saw no need to pass the savings on to customers (I have to say I’d have probably done the same ).

Having experimented with a number of courier companies Andrew plumped for Parcel2Go as “they’re good to deal with, there’s always someone friendly and efficient on the phone and pretty good on price as well”.

(Also as an aside I hear on the grapevine there’s another Parcel2Go promotion in the near future – more details as soon as we can get someone to spill the beans!)

I’m looking forward to seeing loads of TameBay readers at Small Business 2.0 on Saturday. Not least because when it comes to having a pint at the bar, I’m always happy to see old friends!

It’s shaping up to be a great day. We’ve got eBay, Microsoft, BT Tradespace, MarketingDonut and ChannelAdvisor in attendance, to name but a few. The day is about being open to new ideas and also being optimistic about what the net can do for your business. We’ll be able to cover all bases.

I don’t need to tell you how huge the opportunity for businesses on the internet is. Ecommerce has bucked the trend of the recession and continues to grow. 2010, I think, will be a watershed year. The web will become a mainstream business marketing tool like never before. That’s why it will pay to be ahead of the crowd. Anyone who understands that now is a pioneer.

I know I sound like a hippy, but the best thing about Small Business 2.0 is the chat. Meeting other folk, getting enthused, and just knowing you’re on the right track is a great feeling. And we’ll doubtless have a few pints. Did I mention the pints? There will be a drink or two. Business first, pints later. Naturally.

If you haven’t got your ticket yet, there’s still time. The lovely people at BT Tradespace are sponsoring the event and have some freebies to give away, so head on over to their blog and pick up a promo code.

The venue is once again The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London (where incidentally the food is superb!).

As normal at Catalyst there’ll be senior managers from eBay, Amazon presenting and Scot Wingo, CEO of ChannelAdvisor, will be across from the US. It’s worth noting that in the past eBay have typically laid out their plans for the year. Last year they announced Multi-Variant Listings, Free Pictures, Smart FAQs, Easy Returns and Free Shipping.

Tickets for Catatlyst are priced at £249.00 for retailers (£299.00 for non-retailers) – but ChannelAdvisor are discounting the first 50 places to £199.00 for TameBay readers (first come first served so book early).

If you’re in the US and can’t make the trip to the UK don’t worry – 2010 Catalyst US will be held on May 3rd – 5th in Durham, North Carolina.

Parcel2Go are running a competition to win free deliveries for the whole of January. Yes, that’s right, they want to pick up your entire courier bill (up to a total of £3000.00) which for many sellers will enable them to ship everything they sell for a month for free.

Parcel2Go have also got some £50.00 free deliveries for 2nd prize and iPod Shuffles for 3rd placed winners. For a chance of winning all you need to do is to put £20 of pre-pay credit into a Parcel2Go account before 22nd December.

Now many (like myself) will already have a courier contract – so is it worth entering? Well I would give that a resounding yes! Switch some of your deliveries through Parcel2Go (where the cost starts from as little as £3.99 plus a collection charge) and you might be the lucky winner.

Think about what you could do with £3000.00 of free deliveries – I don’t even rack up that much in courier fees in a month, but I could easily upgrade all of my Royal Mail packets to courier for a month and offer a premium service. Rather than pocketing the savings I could run a free delivery promotion so that all my buyers could benefit from free deliveries for January to bump start the new year sales.

If you’re the winner you’ll hear from Parcel2Go by the end of December, and if you do win we’d love to hear how you’re going to use your free deliveries to maximise your eBay sales.

Billed as “Making Best Match Work For You“, the webinar will be hosted by ChannelAdvisor and eBay with Susanne Kaden, Manager Best Match Europe for eBay on hand to answer your questions and give tips on how you can improve your listings visibility.

This is one event not to miss, the opportunity to put your Best Match questions to the experts. There’s been a lot of interest in Best Match since the articles appeared, even as far away as Australia. Yesterday I was invited onto the Oz Round Table forum to talk about Best Match strategies and found that the Aussies have pretty much the same questions as us in the UK. If you’ve still got Best Match questions there’s no one better placed than Susanne to answer them.

Sign up early for the Best Match webinar as places are limited.

It doesn’t matter how small (or large) your business is, from a single person sole trader to a 500 employee ecommerce operation, Small Business 2.0 will help you grow your business. The event is being produced by The Conference People – they’re the guys who ran the eBay UK University events. It will be aimed at the person in your company who is at the decision making sharp end of ecommerce (as a sole trader that’ll be me!) and will cover everything from marketplaces to ecommerce websites and search engines to social media.

The conference will have keynote speeches from eBay, Google University, Microsoft/ Bing and one from Small Business 2.0 title sponsor BT Tradespace. Dan Wilson and Emma Jones from Enterprise Nation will be opening the conference and chairing many of the sessions.

Of course there’s also an exhibition hall and space for networking, and as always with this type of event chatting with your peers is often just as valuable as the official content.

This is an ideal opportunity early in the year to focus your business for 2010 and beyond. I’ll be attending so hope to see you there.

With the next postal strike looming on Friday this week and Monday of next, we’ve decided to run a “Beat the Strike” parcel race competition.

The guys at myHermes are putting up 10 free deliveries for the first 10 sellers to post a comment below saying “I want to Beat the Strike with myHermes“. Basically we’re going to hold a race, with the person who shipped the first parcel to reach its destination being the winner of some free eBay goodies.

If you’re expecting to have a product sold on eBay and can book a delivery on Wednesday (4th November) this week for collection on Thursday (5th November) then you can enter “Beat the Strike”.

“Beat the Strike” Prize

We’ll raid the TameBay goodie cupboard and if you are the winner of “Beat the Strike” you’ll get a decent stash of eBay merchandise as your prize. I know we’ve got an eBay pen, eBay pad, eBay 2Gb memory stick and an eBay baseball cap but we’ll drop in whatever else we can dig out as well. Even if you’re a collector of eBay merch we’ll get you some stuff you definitely won’t already have.

“Beat the Strike” competition rules

There are 10 free deliveries available, one each for the first 10 UK based eBay sellers to enter the competition.

You must be one of the first 10 to add a comment below saying “I want to Beat the Strike with myHermes” to qualify for a free delivery and (as per normal TameBay comments policy) use your real email address so that we can send you your free myHermes delivery voucher.

You must book your parcel collection with myHermes for collection on Thursday 5th November.
(NB you must book by 8pm on Wednesday for a Thursday collection so book early to ensure you don’t miss out)

Once you’ve booked your collection you must email us your myHermes tracking number and the destination postcode so that we can verify your delivery.

You’re welcome to enter even if you miss out on one of the 10 free delivery vouchers, however only one entry per person and you still need to email us your myHermes tracking number and the destination postcode by Thursday morning.

Who ever has a parcel collected on Thursday 5th November and is first to add a comment on this post to confirm that it’s been delivered to their customer wins.

Google are currently running a series of webinars, in conjunction with various partners including Royal Mail, designed to offer support and advice to small businesses who either sell, or are thinking of selling, in overseas markets. The next three focus on using mail services to grow your export business, online business to business marketplaces and selling to customers that don’t speak English.

The seminars are free to attend and run throughout October and are best suited to sellers with their own websites or those who plan to set up an ecommerce operation in the near future. With the current exchange rates UK goods are better value than ever to overseas customer and on eBay export sales from the UK are up around 30% year on year.

Using mail services to grow your export business

Register and attend on October 20 at 10am
Research suggests that the delivery experience is second only to price in customer importance and that 96% of customers would shop again from an online retailer if they were happy with the delivery of their goods. Ensuring your customer receives their goods quickly and in good condition is particularly important when exporting as you are often competing against other companies located in the customer’s own country. In this webinar learn how to use mail services to acquire/retain customers, and to fulfil your orders.

Using online B2B marketplaces

Register and attend on October 22nd at 10am
Find out how you can leverage international online marketplaces to gain free exposure to millions of buyers around the world. Discover do’s and don’ts, best practices and all the quick and easy steps required to find the right buyers for your products. The webinar will be presented by an Alibaba.com professional and is of vital importance to everyone and anyone considering international trade – individuals, SMEs and mid-to-large size enterprises.

Selling to customers who don’t speak English

Register and attend on October 27th at 10am
A person is four times more likely to buy from a website in their native language and they will stay twice as long. That is for someone who speaks English whereas if they don’t, they simply cannot and will not buy.
With overview of AdCommerce as well as optimisation tips and upcoming features. If you have used AdCommerce in the past they’ve already added some neat enhancements such as dynamic keyword insertion. Keyword Insertion creates an ad template that injects the text of the buyer’s search into your ad, tailoring it to exactly what they’re looking for.

I’m hoping one of the “upcoming features” will be click through data so this is one webinar I’ll be sure not to miss.

You’ll need access to the web as well as a telephone line, but don’t worry the call is free so attending won’t cost you a penny. The details you need to join the webinar are:

ChannelAdvisor Insite was interesting this year, not so much for the content but for the mix of attendees. Unsurprisingly in a recession many of the normal suspects were conspicuous by their absence, but the event was still sold out. From the number of attendees suited and booted it appears to have attracted more corporate attendees than independent sellers – perhaps an indication of the direction that eBay is moving towards.

The content was geared towards demonstrations, with all topics being followed by practical demonstrations. Of particular interest was the Rich Media demonstration showing the possibilities for image zoom, rotation, colour swatching and the importance of multiple images from all angles.

eBay themselves are already moving sellers towards rich media with the introduction of search image enlargement and, on the view item page, zoom and enlarge on gallery pictures, although in their session eBay focused more on the changes and how the new Top Seller and other programs will affect sellers on the site.

James Scott MD of CA with Debra Barr

Finally there was a celebrity attendee – Debra Barr, previously a contender in Alan Sugar’s “The Apprentice”. Now working at an ecommerce company, StockShifters, in London, she specialises in liquidating excess or returned stock getting maximum return for retailers whilst supplying premium stock for traders.

The event finished just down the road from the aptly named venue “The Brewery” with a social networking evening in All Bar One, where many a welcome pint was hoisted! There are two remaining Insite events this year, next Thursday (Sept 10th) in Birmingham and the following Thursday (Sept 17th) in Manchester.

In fact if you want to find suppliers it’s worth browsing the Autumn Fair website where there are gazillion ideas of things to sell and links to wholesale websites where you can source them.

If you are attending it’s crucial that you know which companies you want to see before you set out otherwise you’ll spend four days with far too much to see and miss out on the opportunities that suit you best.

If you’re staying in Birmingham and want to stay an extra night don’t forget that ChannelAdvisor Insite is on the 10th September. There’s sure to be a few people attending both, so feel free to use comments on this post to arrange to meet for drinks in between the two events.
