Magento Marketplace to launch in 2016

Magento featFollowing the launch of Magento 2.0, it’s expected that a new Magento Marketplace will become available in Beta this December with full launch coming early in 2016.

Magento Marketplace will ultimately replace Magento Connect. Magento will review every extension and each provider on the new Magento Marketplace to ensure that they offer the highest quality products and services, as well as a curated user experience for our merchants.

The existing Magento Connect site will be available whilst they review and migrate extensions over to Magento Marketplace but will be discontinued at some point in the future, once the migration is complete.

All extensions submitted to the Magento App Store, will go through an automated Basic Check as part of the extension submission flow. Basic Check will help improve the overall quality of products in the Magento Marketplace by checking for plagiarism, security including malware and viruses, and Magento coding standards.

Revenue Share

Magento is also introducing a new revenue share business model. All product sales in the Magento Marketplace, are subject to a 70/30 revenue share split, with 70% of the revenue going to the provider and 30% going to Magento.

Pros & Cons

The biggest downside for Magento users is that they will likely see less extensions available than previously under Magento Connect. However the extensions and services that remain should be high quality and you’ll know that the provider has invested to meet Magento’s requirements.

Magento Marketplace will be much more of an Apple App Store type service, although providers will still be able to market their own extension from their own websites (either in addition to or instead of on the Magento Marketplace).

This is good news for developers who have invested heavily in their solutions as there will likely be less competition, but there may be a temptation to raise fees to cover the 30% revenue going to Magento. Free extensions and themes will still be available and there is no fee to submit apps, the only fee will be if the service is charged for.
