Amazon win big at Golden Globes

Golden Globe AwardsThere’s an Internet revolution happening on our TVs – this year’s Golden Globes have seen Amazon and Netflix scoop three awards between them.

What’s remarkable about this is that the awards have gone to TV shows which have never been broadcast in the traditional sense of the word. The only way you could have watched the shows is with a subscription to Netflix or to Amazon Prime Video.

Netflix got the “Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series”, won by Kevin Spacey in House of Cards, an American political drama television series. Amazon scooped two awards for Transparent, a series about a family who discover their father is transgender – Best Television Series and the show’s Jeffrey Tambor got Best Performance by an Actor.

What’s significant about this is that it brings streaming media mainstream. That’s a big deal for Netflix but it’s an even bigger deal for Amazon. Let’s not forget that the easiest way to subscribe to Amazon Prime Video (formerly LoveFilm) is with an Amazon Prime account, which means free next day shipping.

Amazon winning Golden Globes might make much difference to their profits, but all those people watching will be that much more likely to spend on Amazon and that will do third party resellers no harm at all.
