Amazon to hire 10,000 UK Christmas staff
In a sign that Amazon remains bullish and growing at an astonishing pace, it has been revealed that the ecommerce giant will hire more than 10,000 temporary staff in the run up to what they expect to be the busiest online christmas ever.
The staff will be taken on at Amazon’s eight distrubution centres in Hemel Hempstead, the Midlands, Scotland and Wales as pickers and packers. Amazon said that last year, at the peak of the Christmas rush, they were shipping an average of 2.1 million items every 24 hours. 35 items were ordered every second at the peak of trade.
Although these will be relatively low-paid jobs and temporary, in the current climate the creation of 10k jobs isn’t to be sniffed at and I suspect there will be many people keen to take the work. And if you want something more long term, then it seems that taking a temporary job at Amazon can be your “foot in the door.”
Said Catherine McDermott, Amazon’s director of operations: “We are a company in growth and when we have permanent positions to fill, it’s the top performing temporary employees we look to.”
