eBay and Microsoft partner for cloud computing

eBay and Microsoft have announced that eBay is to be one of the first customers of Microsoft’s new Windows Azure platform appliance for cloud computing. Basically, this should allow eBay to scale more effectively and use technology more flexibly, to provide a more reliable and robust site, as well as one that can be improved more easily.

That whooshing sound you hear is most of this going over my head, so I’ll let eBay’s VP of technology, James Barrese, explain:

   I don’t particularly trust Microsoft for this sort of thing but it isn’t like they could have gone with Google or Amazon which are the other big cloud-computing providers.

   Switching to cloud hosting was easily one of the best things I ever did with my business. Since I switched over almost a year ago I think I’ve had a total of around one hour of downtime attributed to my host as opposed to the likely few days of downtime I’d have had if I’d stayed with Dreamhost.
