Pre-orders for .co domain names are now available

As an inveterate collector of domain names, I have to resist the temptation to gather every possible domain suffix. I want the .com – maybe the .co.uk if that’s where my customers are likely to be, the odd .net and .fr… but generally I can resist the .biz, the .in and the .tv.

However, the good people of Colombia are about to change my mind for once.Previously the Colombian registrar has sold .com.co, .net.co and the rather lovely nom.co. But this July, .co domains go on sale to the general public. With their similarity to the classic .com, these seem likely to be very popular with name squatters and competitors, so snapping up any that you’re really bothered about might be a good plan.

GoDaddy now has .co domains available for preorder: you can pay $299.99 for priority pre-registration, or the rather more palatable $29.99 for standard pre-registration.

   I saw this earlier. What I don’t understand is why someone should have to surrender a $270 application fee just because GoDaddy fails to acquire a name that they own the trademark for. Seriously, what kind of business is that?

         Is only GoDaddy dealing with prereg for .co? Think I’ll try a couple of $29 as I don’t own all the domain suffix but .co is nicer than my current .co.uk

   I believe the majority of the ones which have announced their intention to sell are US registrars so far. My current UK registrar http://www.LCN.com has informed me they will be participating also. Details haven’t been published on the site yet but I’m personally in no rush to shell out $300 for the pre-landrush stages.
