Mark Lewis leaves eBay to be replaced by Clare Gilmartin

Mark Lewis is leaving eBay, having been with eBay since 2004 he was appointed eBay UK Managing Director in January 2008 when outgoing MD Doug McCallum became Senior Vice President, Europe. Speaking of his time at eBay Mark says he’s “immensely proud of what we’ve achieved as a team over recent years” but that he’s “made the tough decision that now is the right time to take up a new challenge outside of eBay and I am looking forward to deciding what that may be”.
Speaking of Mark, Doug said “Under Mark’s leadership, the eBay business has performed strongly. The UK business has maintained its position as the number one e-commerce site, with the number of items bought on the site up by almost 20% year on year”. Doug went on to add “I am personally very sorry to see Mark leave the company he has led with such commitment, but I understand completely his reasons for seeking out a new challenge”.
Mark will be replaced by Clare Gilmartin who returns from maternity leave to become EU Marketplaces Vice President. Clare has been with eBay for six years and has previously held a role with similar responsibility across the UK and German eBay sites.
We wish Mark good luck in his next role and look forward to the future with Clare at the helm.

Call me old and cynical, but I love the “seeking out a new challenge” bit. First thing that comes to my mind is did he jump or was he pushed?

Hmmmm……. exactly. I know of no one that leaves a job without another one lined up, unless they’ve won the lottery or retired – especially in a recession.

Personally, I’ve NEVER had a new job when I quit the old one (except for the time I quit to sell on eBay full time). Finding a new job is a full time job in itself: you can’t do that on someone else’s time.
Plus that lovely gap between jobs when you can sneak a month off… it’s wonderful. One time I wrote a novel. Wouldn’t miss that for the world.

Good riddance
This man has NOTHING to be proud of during his time at Ebay. As a far as I am concerned he single handedly destroyed the market for media categories on Ebay and several peoples livelihoods by the introduction of free postage. Many people predicted that it would cost him his job and I am glad to see that Ebay have while never going to admit it publicly at least acted decisively.
I bear no ill will to the man personally. I have never met him, but many of us watched incredulously as he denied point blank on Working Lunch that including postage in the price was an increase in fees. It was inevitable that someone who was in such complete denial and frankly complete ignorance of his own product was ever going to be able to continue in his role. I hope that the new head will now look urgently at the imminent problem of DSRS (also introduced under his watch) that is likely to cause nearly as much damage to Ebay as the postage fiasco and who knows maybe some of us will come back to Ebay now you have at least shown some mettle

What great news. I am so pleased to see that this idiot has gone. He single handedly was responsible for destroying many good honest ebay sellers lives. Unlike others I do not wish him well. I hope he suffers now as much as the suffering he has caused sellers. It will be interesting to see if ebay UK can recover. Since this idiot introduced the Post Free rule I have taken away 80% of my business from ebay. Like many others I am soon to be and ex seller on ebay. Good Riddance.
