Last ditch talks between Royal Mail and CWU fail
by Chris Dawson
The CWU have just held a press conference confirming that Royal Mail workers would go on strike this Thursday and Friday and also promising to announce further strike dates in the near future.
Dave Ward who was leading negotiations with Royal Mail said that the CWU “made progress with Royal Mail” and wanted to end dispute through negotiations. He said the blame for the derailing of talks rested with external forces and named “three characters who have not been to meetings – Mark Higson, Adam Crozier, Peter Mandelson”.
He went on to say Lord Mandelson was “in cohorts with management” and that he believes “it’s pay back time” for the union. He said that the “Government and Royal Mail are working hand in hand to ensure CWU and Royal Mail don’t come to agreement” with the ultimate aim of privatisation.
We’ve been accused constantly by posties of not listening to their side, so we invited the CWU to guest post on TameBay, so that they could put their point of view to small business owners, and explain why the strike is something they should support.
We asked the CWU to explain why the strike action is necessary, and specifically to address our readers as to how it will affect them, and how they believe the severe disruption a strike will cause will benefit this group of small businesses in the long term.
They agreed that this would be a good idea, and promised us content on several occasions but have failed to deliver. Small business owners can draw their own conclusions from the CWU’s failure to address their concerns.

Small business owners will indeed
The CWU didn’t even bother to acknowledge the email that I sent them about the disputes several weeks ago – let alone address any of the points raised
That’s revenge because Lord Mandy didn’t reply to Big Billy’s emails or even return his calls.
Mandy puts the crafty into ‘crafty cats’ the guy is a legend.
Credit when it’s due, this guy is the cleverest MP I think the world has ever seen.
I hate violence but I fully support punching any postmen at the moment. Idiots
Actually most of the posties I’ve spoken to personally are a bit bemused and sad about the whole thing. All the working practices such as carrying out other work once they’ve finished their round before their shift officially ends they’ve been doing for a couple of years. It’s just London that seem to be objecting to the new work regime.
The thing is Chris none of them are actually going to say ‘I’m all for this strike and I’m looking forward to a few days down the pub while your business goes tits up’ are they?
These same people are going to have to deliver to us all again after the strikes and I’m with HU – just punch them all. You’ve at least got a 50% chance of hitting one who voted for this mess.
Andy says – just punch them all. You’ve at least got a 50% chance of hitting one who voted for this mess.
Sums you up really! & you call us tossers.
I should rephrase that.
Soon to be unemployed tossers.
Watch out on your round tomorrow. I may just answer the door.
Oh,
Go and play with a 40′ lorry preferably whilst it thundering round the M25.
Useless tossers. (as I think I’ve said before)
I look forward to Lord Mandy and the RM leaders crushing the CWU and orange posties in the New Year.
And if you think they’re hard done by etc etc just have a look at this post on their chat board:

Now for a large whisky!
I didn’t need to log in as I registered there weeks ago
That thread doesn’t really do much in the way of positive PR or engendering sympathy for the cause does it?
None of their threads do.
Just a bunch of idiots. RM couldn’t get better PR than they provide free of charge.
Morons.
As an aside it’s interesting to note Royal Mail announced they’d hire 30,000 temporary workers to clear any backlogs caused by strikes.
So far they’ve had around 110,000 applications for those positions so there’s no shortage of people who would be happy to work for Royal Mail.
Didn’t you watch the press conference Chris? Those figures are put out there by the Press Dept at RM. There is no-one out there looking for a job at the moment. It’s all spin.
Plenty of news reports on it although their figures are out of date now, they keep getting more applications in
Of course it’s spin though… I mean we’re not in a recession, no one wants to do the job, and no one in the country is out of work
Although I’m guessing whatever happens in this dispute there will have to be redundancies at Royal Mail in the New Year. I’m sure Mandy, Adam and Higson have already worked that out.
And I won’t be worried for anyone ay RM when that happens. I’ll just be having another large whisky!
My biggest fear is that the Royal Mail will not back down and give in to the bully boys tactics of CWU, i’m in complete agreement with that, but I also fear the CWU will not back down either, so this could run and run.
When the last strikes happened the public support for the postal workers was quite high, now the only people posting on boards and news websites in favour of the strikes are the striking post workers, they have lost the public support. How in anyones right mind a strike in a credit cruch and ever increasing unemployment, is a good idea. I’d sack the lot and recruit new staff who would bite your hand off for a job.
My local postie who is also the local union rep, and I had a stand up row in the post office yesterday, when I asked him infront of all the post office customers to explain why they are on stike, he stormed out, and I ended up with a round of applause, i’m looking forward to round two next week!
This is what will happen:
Gordo has bankrupted the country, there is no more money left to subsidise the royal mail. Mandy with the full support of the Royal Mail board will take the RM to the brink of bankruptcy, when all seems lost out of the blue a private equity firm will pop up and offer X, the RM will be sold off, everyone involved will be given a directorship or made a lord. The end.
If I could gets odd’s on it I would have placed the bet last year.
“a private equity firm will pop up and offer X, the RM will be sold off,”
FOR A NOMINAL £1 NO DOUBT including all the freehold properties.
ANOTHER nice little earner for the sales of UK assets.
All the clichés are out tonight. Is this discussion reserved for the clueless, the blind & the ignorant?
YES,
Post worker are welcome.
Isn’t that what you expect during a postal strike?
Jimbo, as someone said earlier…
there’s lorry on the M25 with your name on it.
Goodbye!
Oh, and enjoy your redundancy pay. It’ll be the last pay packet you ever get. Unemployable doesn’t even begin to describe you lot once Mandy has gotten rid of you in the New Year.
What redundancy pay would that be?
Im a manager at Royal Mail and we do have contingency plans in place to clear the mail delayed by the industrial action. If you read what Chris Dawson has written he has it spot on. People where I work (in a large mail centre) don’t want a strike and are unsure what they are striking for. You will find the longer it goes on the more members will come in as they basically see one days strike as a day off. The problem with these inept fools leading the CWU is that they never actually speak to members to see what they want.
lETS JUST HOPE, THERE WILL SOME BUSINESS STILL AROUND then, shall We??.
If they do not want to strike why was there such a strong vote for strike action?
What was the percentage of CWU members, who used their vote, that voted for srike action?
The bottom line is the CWU do represent the majority of the postal workers. The majority of CWU members voted in favour of the strike.
Have you made your placard yet, or have you been out collecting oil drums
Do you know for a fact the CWU represent the majority? I dont think so.
Why would I be making a placard?
120,000 of the 140,000 Royal Mail workers are CWU members (according to Royal Mail).
It seems I need to remind people again that we have a comments policy on this site, and if you wish to comment, you are required to abide by it.
Specifically, inviting other people to play in the traffic will stop. You are welcome to debate the issues as vehemently as you like, but you will not advocate personal violence.
If you now find that your posts are being moderated, you know why.
Calm down dear!
It’s just a forum.
Just bought 2 watches on daily deal – great deal but they must be gutted they have got a deal on the first day of the strikes.
It will be interesting to see if they get affected.
I don’t care as long as they arrive by Christmas…
The mp3/4 player seems to be flying out at about 4 sales a minute, so doesn’t look like it’s had much affect.
They are using another courier though.
Both good deals today – I thought they had been a bit week the last few days.
A message to all those posties who “don’t” want the strike from the messiah Brian:
“You’re all individuals”
If all these posties don’t want it then how did the strike get voted in ??
