PayPal only: eBay vow to fight ACCC draft ruling

eBay Australia have issued a press release challenging the ACCC draft notice and vowing to fight on.
They have delayed implementation of the PayPal only policy until 15th July, it was scheduled to go live on the 17th June. The increase in Buyer Protection raising the cover to AU$20,000 will still come into effect on the 17th June for Australian buyers who pay via PayPal.
Whether eBay will succeed is anyone’s guess, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely. The ACCC note that over 600 eBay users, half of them buyers, sent in submissions opposing PayPal only and they themselves have “serious competition concerns” if they allowed an exception.
eBay say they hope to “work with the ACCC and hopes to achieve a final outcome which has the safety and security of eBay’s members as its paramount objective” and that they believe “the consumer benefits of this initiative are worth fighting for”.

Interesting to hear that eBay “has the safety and security of eBay’s members as its paramount objective” especially when you read this post in the tamebay forum. It would seem that Paypal, when replying to a customers claim they don’t always make sure they are responding to the correct account holder or about the correct claim!

Typical ebay arrogance – they think they can rule in the Australian internet market place! They can’t understand buyer concern or seller concern and now even a government body’s concern. They think they’re above the law. Well they’ll soon learne they are not. Pride comes before a fall.

Thank goodness common sense has prevailed and the ACCC are in agreement with what the majority of us have been saying all along. I want to give my customers choice. If they want to pay with Paypal, that’s okay, but if they don’t I’d much rather give them other options than lose them as a customer.
Why are Ebay pushing the $20,000 Buyer Protection cover so hard? What good is that to any of my customers who are buying items which cost less than $100? And while I’m having my vent, when are Ebay/Paypal going to fix all the bugs and glitches in their system/s? If Paypal actually worked properly then it might (only might, though) be viable as the only payment option. But a lot of the time it doesn’t work! Payment notification emails go missing, accounts get frozen for no good reason, payments get returned to buyers. And the latest annoyance – transactions which are given the ‘green tick’ which means it’s all good to sent, get reversed and funds are frozen, usually after the item has already been sent, so the seller has no payment and no item. Wrong, wrong, wrong, Paypal.
